04/02/2008 - Cohesion policy must go beyond Lisbon and Gothenburg says COTER working group
The working group set up by the Committee of the Regions’ Commission for Territorial Cohesion Policy (COTER) met in Brussels for the first time yesterday to discuss the future of European Cohesion Policy and consider necessary steps for narrowing the economic disparities among regions and Member States. The group has been conceived as a forum for discussion between EU institutions and local/regional associations to highlight the benefits of cohesion policy in the wider context of the debate surrounding the future of the EU budget.
31/01/2008 - Plenary Session (6-7 February): Election of new CoR President. Barroso, Verheugen, Fischer Boel and Žagar to address assembly
On Wednesday 6 February, the Committee of the Regions (CoR) will elect a new President to serve for the second half of its current four-year term, which runs to February 2010. The first plenary session of the year, which will take place in the European Parliament, will also see the election of the CoR’s new First Vice-President, 27 Vice-Presidents of the national delegations and other members of the Bureau.

The five Presidents of the Alps-Mediterranean Euroregion are due to officially inaugurate their new office in Brussels on 31 January.

Le 28 janvier, le Comité des régions (CdR) et le Comité économique et social européen (CESE) accueilleront une conférence-débat du COLLECTIF français sur les Services sociaux d’intérêt général (SSIG), think tank composé de prestataires de services sociaux et de santé et constitué afin de contribuer aux débats communautaires sur ces services.

Le réseau OLA (Observatory on Local Autonomy) sera présenté le 28 janvier à Bruxelles, au siège du Comité des régions (CdR) en présence de Michel Delebarre. OLA est un réseau de recherche scientifique parrainé par le CdR.

23/01/2008 - Croatia meets the CoR to enhance cooperation
The Committee of the Regions Working Group on Croatia, met for the third time on 23 January under the chairmanship of Isidoro Gottardo (right), President of the EPP Group, to discuss the prospects for Croatia’s EU accession negotiations in 2008.
22/01/2008 - Croatian Mayors and County Presidents meet in the Committee of the Regions to evaluate and step up Croatian commitment towards Europe
The prospects for Croatia’s EU accession negotiations in 2008 will be the focus of the 3rd meeting of the Working Group on Croatia, which takes place at the Committee of the Regions on Wednesday, 23 January (Room JDE 51, 9.30-17:00). Key participants will include Ambassador Branko Baricevic, Head of Mission to the EU, Neven Pelicaric, State Secretary of the Croatian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and European Integration, Hannes Swoboda (AT/PES), European Parliament rapporteur on Croatia.
22/01/2008 - EDUC President Myllyvirta to address Presidency conference on Innovation and Clusters, Stockholm (22-23 January)
Jyrki Myllyvirta, President of the Commission for Culture, Education and Research (EDUC), will represent the Committee of the Regions at the European Presidency conference on Innovation and Clusters in Stockholm (22-23 January). Mr Myllyvirta, Mayor of Lahti (FI/EPP), will participate in a panel discussion chaired by Swedish Deputy Prime Minister Maud Olofsson on the first day of the conference. Other high-level speakers at the event include European Commission Vice-President, Commissioner Günther Verheugen, Slovenian Minister for Economy Andrej Vizjak, French Minister of State Hervé Novelli, and Dirk Ahner, Director General, DG Regional Policy.

Committee of the Regions (CoR) President Michel Delebarre has paid tribute to Austrian member Walter Zimper, who died on 13 January following a long illness. He was 65.

Initiée par Bernard Soulage, premier Vice-président du Conseil régional de Rhône-Alpes (FR/PSE) et plusieurs fois rapporteur d’avis dans le domaine des transports, cette journée de travail portera sur “l’avenir de la mobilité urbaine dans l’UE”.
11/01/2008 - Les régions doivent lutter contre l’obésité
La commission du développement durable (DEVE) du Comité des régions s’est réunie hier pour discuter du projet d’avis sur “une stratégie européenne pour les problèmes de santé liés à la nutrition, la surcharge pondérale et l’obésité” de M. Mario Magnani, Vice-président du Conseil régional du Trentin haut-Adige/Tyrol du Sud (IT/ALDE). Ce dernier a appelé à la mise en place d’une véritable “éducation alimentaire” pour réduire les problèmes de santé dus à une mauvaise alimentation et à l’obésité.

Le projet d’avis “faire face aux problèmes de rareté de la ressource en eau et de sécheresse dans l’union européenne” a été au centre des discussions de la réunion de la commission du développement durable (DEVE) qui s’est tenue au Comité le 10 janvier.
