The Slovenian Presidency of the Council of the European Union and the Committee of the Regions (CoR) in Brussels have published a brochure outlining their policy objectives for the coming six months.

From start to finish, 2007 was an action-packed year for the Committee of the Regions. It began with the arrival of the Romanian and Bulgarian delegations, increasing the assembly’s membership from 317 to 344, and ended with the signing of an historic EU Treaty, which promises to increase the visibility of the CoR and regional authorities in the European decision-making process.

The future of EU maritime policy will be the focus of two special debates during this week’s Committee of the Regions plenary session at the Charlemagne Building in Brussels. The CoR will attempt to stimulate and strengthen activities geared toward the prevention of gender violence at local, regional and national level during a seminar focusing on best practices for combating abuse against women on 26 November. The seminar, hosted by the EU political assembly and organised by the Swedish Association of Local Authorities and Regions (SALAR), will be an opportunity for local authorities and regions to exchange views and experiences, network and establish relationships for future development.
Committee of the Regions (CoR) members Sir Albert BORE, chairman of the Commission for Territorial Cohesion (COTER), and Michael SCHNEIDER, rapporteur for the opinion on the Fourth Cohesion Report, together with CoR Secretary General Gerhard STAHL, will participate in the informal meeting of EU regional development ministers in Ponta Delgada, Azores, on 23-24 November. Que la Commission ne présente qu’une annexe sur le sujet des services publics est une dégradation protocolaire des services publics au niveau européen, dégradation révélatrice du fait qu’ils ne représentent pas ou plus une priorité politique pour la Commission”, a déclaré Michel Delebarre.
The Committee of the Regions, represented by Uno ALDEGREN (SE/PES), President of the External Relations and Decentralised Cooperation Commission, Franz SCHAUSBERGER (AT/EPP), Heini UTUNEN-ZIV (FI/ALDE) and Uno SILBERG (EE/UEN-EA), participated in the Fifth Council of Europe Elections Observation Mission (CEEOM V), in Kosovo from 13 to 18 November, to observe the municipal and mayoral elections which took place on 17 November.
Lech WALESA, former President of Poland, leader of the Solidarity (Solidarnosc) trade union movement and winner of the Nobel Peace Prize, will be guest of honour at a conference on regional competitiveness at the Committee of the Regions (CoR) in Brussels on 20 November.
